The woman is identified by locals as Maiti, who works at a gym where Indonesian football star and former world no. 10 football player Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was playing, according to television reports.
She was talking about the violence, police told the news portal Antara.
“The woman, who was holding an Indonesian passport, said there had been a fight between rival gangs that led to the death of several people and injured several more. She added that the man had been beaten by the players before the incident,” police said.
Jakarta police chief Major General Arman Badarjo has told reporters that police went to the arena with more than 20 officers but that “there was no evidence or information to support a terrorist act.”
“We are not able to reach any conclusions as to why the fight started,” he said.
The incident occurred during a football match between Indonesia’s national team and Singapore’s national team, which Indonesia lost 2-0.
Earlier reports said the football match had broken up and that the players were going to leave the stadium when the brawl broke out. The Indonesian football federation tweeted that the match had ended in a draw but that they were investigating the incident.
A statement from the Jakarta police said they were looking for two suspects and that police would appeal to the public for help in finding them.
