PHILADELPHIA — In a series that already felt at times like the Phillies were playing for pride and redemption and at times seemed to be playing for nothing more than a wild card and a postseason birth, they finally found a way to close the door on San Diego and move a step closer to a World Series birth.
The Phillies made a dramatic pitch at the end, and they made it count. They finished off a 6-3 victory over the Padres in Game 3 of the National League Division Series before a sold-out crowd of 45,852 Saturday night.
It was more of a victory for pride. It was more of a victory for good, old-fashioned winning. That’s what this trip is all about, right?
The Phillies now are an unlikely wild-card leader and a club on a roll, a club that is just a step away from a World Series birth.
The Phillies were within striking distance of becoming the first team to clinch a postseason berth since the 2002 ALCS, but they needed a little bit of a miracle to make it happen.
They got it.
“We are playing better. That’s what it comes down to,” reliever Pat Neshek said. “We are playing well now. This is the playoffs. We are going to make the postseason.”
The Phillies took a lead in the top of the third, thanks to a two-out walk by Aaron Nola and an RBI single by Jose Ramirez. But San Diego tied the game up in the bottom of the third.
Corey Seager hit a two-run homer off Ryan Madson and a two-run homer off of Zach Eflin made it 3-1.
