The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly approved on Thursday a resolution that calls on Israel to recognize Jerusalem as the “capital of the State of Israel” and calls on the United States to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The resolution, which passed by a total of 128-9, was strongly backed by more than 80 nations. However, the United States voted against the resolution which means President Donald Trump will not be able to stop it from passing. But if he does veto it, the United States and dozens of Arab and Muslim nations could be stuck with the responsibility for the vote.

The United Nations’ General Assembly voted on Thursday to formally approve a resolution that calls on the Israeli government to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel.

The resolution, which passed by a total of 128-9, was strongly backed by more than 80 nations. But the United States voted against the resolution which means President Donald Trump will not be able to stop it from passing. In fact, it seems the United States and dozens of Arab and Muslim nations could be stuck with the responsibility for the vote.

The resolution was unanimously adopted after the United States, Israel, and Palestine all voted against the measure. The White House, which is widely expected to veto the resolution, had expressed its opposition to the measure in April. But after Palestinian officials repeatedly said their application was not withdrawn, a senior White House official on Wednesday told The Times of Israel the measure was still being considered.

Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour told ABC News on Wednesday: “We would hope that the United States will decide on the resolution of our application … It will not affect the United States’ position on the peace process.”

The Palestinian leadership has asked the United States, along with other countries, to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
