Carlos Alcaraz defeats Frances Tiafoe at the US Open semifinals in a battle of tennis’ rising stars.
No. 28 Frances Tiafoe looks on as Carlos Alcaraz of Spain holds his ground in the third round of the US Open tennis tournament at Arthur Ashe Stadium on the eve of the tournament. Alcaraz went up 3-1 in the 10th, and Tiafoe went down 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4 to advance to his first Grand Slam semifinal.

The tournament features a strong mix of players from the top 50 of the ATP rankings, such as No. 10 Rafael Nadal, two-time US Open champion Andy Murray, No. 20 Kevin Anderson and No. 22 Jack Sock, as well as some top-10 veterans, such as No. 6 Stan Wawrinka, No. 7 John Isner, No. 8 John Isner, No. 4 Juan Martin Del Potro, No. 5 Rafael Nadal, No. 3 John Isner, No. 1 Andy Murray, No. 4 Jiri Vesely and No. 2 Rafael Nadal.
Tiafoe has earned more than $1.7 million in career prize money. He also has won 11 titles in the US Open, including the 2017 title.
Wawrinka beat Anderson in the fourth round. The US Open is the only Grand Slam tournament where Wawrinka has not been defeated in a major semifinal, while he has been defeated in the fourth round at the US Open only once, in 2011.
Nadal has won this tournament 12 times. Nadal has never been defeated in a Grand Slam semifinal.
In the men’s semifinal, Wawrinka beat Murray in straight sets, defeating Murray 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (1), 1-6, 7-6 (7-3). Murray went up 0-2 in the third to give Wawrinka the chance to close out the match.
